CASTLECLIFF’S DRAINAGE.
TOWN BOARD DECIDES TO COMPLETE. £20,000 LOAN TO BE RAISED. Mr J. Ramsay submitted the following report to the Castlecliff Town Board last night with reference to the drainage of the suburbs : As requested by your Board, I herewith submit my report for the completion of drainage in your district. I have gone carefully into the cost of completing the whole of the sewage proposals which were submitted to you by your late engineer (Mr McDonald). The estimate lias been prepared from the plans aud specifications handed to me by your foreman. There is some discrepancy between the depth shown on the plan and the present ground levels; this, of course, could be brought about by tile sand drifting, and 1 have no doubt that would account lor the difference in the levels. There is no complete plan showing the whole of the drainage of your district, and I took levels to and from the main outlets of the sewers to ascertain if -the levels agreed with the plan. I find that the main fixed points agree with levels that I have taken, and I can assure the Board that the drainage scheme, as set out, is correct, but it will be necessary to (prepare a plan showing all details and bench marks for future reference and guidance ft> the Board. '1 he total distance of drains to be laid down amounts to 6 miles 72.05 chains, and the amount of money required to complete the work amounts to £18,842 17s. This is for labour and material only. There are sufficient pipes on hand to complete the work, so there is no need to make any allowance for pipes. I have attached cost sheets showing the cost of the drains in each street, also showing a summary of the various size drains, manholes, and distances. In preparing this estimate I have allowed for every contingency, and I can assure the Board that the whole of the drainage works, as specified, can be completed within tha estimate given, provided the work is carried out with a sufficient number of men, and not done in small sections, as this makes the work icore costly. There was very little discussion on the report. The-chairman (Mr H. W. Cooper) moved that the necessary steps bo taken to raise a loan of £20,000 from the State Advances, to carry out the drainage scheme. Commissioner Rogers seconded the resolution. In reply to a question, the clerk stated that the loan would mean a rate of nearly a penny. The motion was carried.
