MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council met on Monday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), and C-rs. A. H Bill. F. J. Christensen, ' J. A. Bush, W. Price. AV. Oldfield, J. Mogridge, and H. T. Peat. Correspondence was diealt with as follows : A. J. Sutcliffe, asking for a renewal of the Town Hall for pictures under the present conditions.—Agreed to for 12 months. Beale Pictures, Tauranga, offering £l2 for seven nights per week for rental of the Town Hall.—Received. AV. 11. Burgess, secretary Rangitikei Schools Sports Association, applying for use of the Marton Park for the above Association’s annual sports on Saturday, 25th March, 1922. —Granted. Christensen and Stanford, solicitors, stating that D. Anderson’s claim had been satisfactorily arranged for £3 10s. —lt was decided to offer £2 10s. S. S. Burgess, Turakina, drawing at tention to the unsatisfactory lighting of the streets when repairs are being carried out. It appears that the complainant struck the barrier across the road, and smashed one of his car lamps. He wanted to know if the Council was prepared to pay for the damage incurred . —R eceived. Medical Officer of Health, advising that every precaution should be taken in view of the plague cases that are likely to occur during March and April —Received. I’eilding Borough Council, forwarding information in regard to the establishment of abattoirs in Feilding. Those were erected in 1904 and cost £5509. — Referred to a committee of the Council.

Secretary Marton-Levin Railway League, forwarding a list of charges in connection with the Commission, which amounted to £173 13s Hd. Marton Borough Council’s share is £2o.—Passed for payment. Receipts from 13th February to 13th March, 1922—Town Hall £62 Ils Bd, rates £6o 18s sd, gas consumers £323 4s 9d, gas fittings £lB 10s 2d. coke, tar, 3s 3d. water £2O, library £-4 18s 7d, rents reserves £9 ss, sale gravel, etc. £7 6s Gd, rubbish removal £6 18s 6d, cemetery fees £3 10s. building permits and s. fees £lO, vehicle and drivers’ licenses £6 12s sundries £75 18s lid; total, £666 17s 7d. Gas AVorking Account. —Receipts: Gas consumers £326 4s 9d, gas fittings £lB 10s. coke, tar, etc. £49 3s 3d, refunds street lighting £2O, refunds Town Hall £6; total, £412 18s. Expenditure : Gas working, wages, etc. £532 ss, gqas fittings, wages, etc. £2 8s Bd, interest and sinking fund £3B 10s; totaj £573 3s 6d. REPORTS. The borough foreman (Mr AV. R. Branf) reported as follows: Maintenance.—During the past fortnight the usual maintenance work has been carried out. High Street. —AVo have scarified, metalled, tarred, rolled and sanded and completed eleven chains of this road at a cost of £l7 10s per chain. This road will require a light coat of tar and said to put on a finished surface. AVe still have 22 barrels of the tar in stock, sufficient to do six chains of road 30 feet wide, from Broadway to the Rangi tikei Motors Ltd. I could patch and make a good job of this at a cost of £5 per chain, as we have all material in stock. Two water leaks have been attended to. Extended culvert Cubbaballa Street. Gorse Cutting Contract. Upper Tutaenui.—Mr Klenner has completed this work. Cr. Oldfield and myself inspected the same and found work satisfactory. This man has employed labour and owes a considerable amount. Dam.—There are 20 feet of water in the dam. The bank is in good order. High Street.—Cost of work done on eleven chains of road, High Street, including crushing, carling, scarifying, grading, ‘tarring, sanding, and rolling, etc. Cost of crushing metal, £63 Is lid. Total cost of construction of road, £192 Cs Id. Cost per chain. £l7 10s; borough foreman’s estimate £l9 8s per chain. It «vas decided to reform and tar AVellington Road as suggested in the report. The question of excessive motor speeds was referred to by Crs. Mogridge and Peat, and it was decided to ask the police to take action. Crs. Christensen, Price and Mogridge were appointed to confer with the AV ar Memorial Committee to arrange for the upnveiling of the war memorial on Anzac Day.
