THE APOSTLES.
WALL PAINTINGS UNEARTHED. Received March 10, 1 a.m. LONDON, March 9. The “Daily Mail’s” Rome correspondent states that Professor Lanciani, the eminent archaelogist, describes the Christian Hypogeum recently unearthed at Rome, while excavating for a garage, as the most wonderful archaeological discovery of our time. The find consists of wall paintings of Saint Peter and Saint Poul and other Apostles which are much older than any other extant. Professor Lanciani declares that it is of exceptional interest because. it evidently shows the Apostles as they really were, instead of the conventional shapes. The earliest pictorial representations of the Apostles previous to this discovery date from the fourth century. They are at least two hundred years earlier though some archaeologists believe they were painted in the actual lifetime of the Apostles. The artists display a knowledge of technique previously unsuspected. The draping is good, and the pose natural. The faces are full of character. The figures of Peter and Paul are especially well preserved.
