Amythas should be able to account for Winning Hit over a mile to-day, but it should b a great race. Boomerday and Namutere will be in the boom for the Te Kuiti Cup to-day. Infante will run well in the principal sprint. Weights for the Wanganui Cup and Flying Handicap should appear in Monday morning’s issue. Horses carrying the colours of Mr G. D. Greenwood in New Zealand this season have so far won stakes to the value of £8930, and £5116 which attached to Cupidon’s victory in the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby. Gloaming will add another few hundred to the list to-day.

Australian sportsmen continue to invest largely in English bloodstock. At the Newmarket (England) December sales Frank Bullock, acting for an Australian sportsman, secured Our Prince, a four year old horse by Bachelor’s Double —Painted Lady for 2100gns., and a three year old bay colt by Corcyra—Dough for 11 50gns. The Viscountess Jellicoe haas registered her racing livery as follows:—Royal blue, gold sleeves, gold crossed sashes and can. It goes without saying that a win for Viscountess Jellicoe’s colours on making thoir debut on the New Zealand turf would be an event to call up a high note of enthusias’m.

The field for the Te Kuiti Cup today is composed as follows: - Boomerday 9.0, Radiant Light 8-12, Pente Esthonia 8.2, Namutere 7.4, Martial Dawn 6.8, Sylvan, Poanui, Glencairn, Prince Carl and Marble Slab 6.7. The extensive entries received for events run over sprint courses is In certain quarters made a strong point of, but the question can also be asked. Is it to the true interests of racing that that particular division should be fostered to the extent it is? asks a northern scribe. The click of the totalisator numbers, it is to be feared, in the majority of cases decides the point, and until the Racing Conference formulates a new decree it may be doubted if there will be any marked alteration in the pipsent order of things. The Racing Conference, it must be said, has never made any serious attempt to encourage distance racing as against sprinting for any but the best class of horses, and consequently owners of poor class horses have I no option but to run them over I sprint courses. There is undoubti edly a wide field for thought on this distance question, and whether an 1 alteration is brought about either by , a system of grading or other means the same will be welcomed.
