NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By 'Early Bird ”) Concluding day at Riccarton today. The crack three-year-oids will know what Amythas can do when they turn for home in the Stead Memorial this afternoon. Rational finished behind Absurdum in the Stewards' Handicap, but the position ought to be reversed today. Mandrake, Coniston, Prosperity and Miss Gold should make amends this afternoon for previous failures. Absurd had three representatives in the New Zealand Derby on Monday, but they failed to gain a place. While Grotesque and Fulsome had every chance, some excuse may be offered for Tamatete, as he had anything but a good passage. After the Irweli Handicap at Riccarton on Monday, the Judicial -Stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club suspended O. Voight, the rider of Kilroe, until the end of the second day’s racing, for deliberately breaking through the barrier. The time registered by Winning Hit when he won the C.J.C. Derby, jknin. 34 l-ssec., equalled the record for the race, held jointly by Desert Gold and The Toff. t. - --mt. . . ._t ". ■ ■
I The racecourse detectives who I were recently appointed by the New i Zealand Racing Conference, com- ■ menced their duties last week, and I two of them, Messrs A. Ward and J. iTorrance, are officiating at. the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and I they will also be in attendance at ■ the New Zealand Metropolitan TrotIting Club's fixtures, the Trotting | Conference having joined with the | Racing Conference to carry out the scheme. Referring to the sensational finish for the N.Z. Trotting Cup, a southern writer states that Sherwood was drawing away from Reta Peter when he crossed over and finished on the rails. Reta Peter was snatched and brought out, but Sherwood went on to win by two lengths. After the race the stewards held an inquiry ’ ' into the case of crossing by Sherwood, and after a long deliberation I the race was awarded to Reta Peter. ! Sherwood was placed second, and E. ! Holmes, junr., his driver, was fined I £25. There was a doubt about the cross taking place about 50 yerds from home, but it did not affect the result. Wilson, the driver of Reta Peter, appeared to help his cause by snatching up his mare and this may have impressed the stewards. Sherwood was under the whip when he swerved in, but was well clear. The rules, however, state that a horse must maintain his line after entering the straight, and a cast-iron interpretation of trotting robbed the I winner of the fruits of victory. M inning Hit, who won the New : Zealand Derby, showed his best twoi year-old form at Riccarton, where I he won three races, the Spring Nurisery Handicap, Middle Park Plate, , and Champagne Stakes. He was placed in other events but those were his only successes last season. ■ 1 hough a useful performer, he was • not quite up to Ute best two-year-old i class of last season, in spite of the ■ tact that he beat Mermin in the s Cuampagne Stakes. He started as > tlir. e-year-oid by winning the Tinj waid Handicap at. Ashburton and a few weeks later he captured the I Duneain Guineas, while the Derby ■ race marked his only other appear- ! ance this season. He was turned I out in great condition for the Derby and he ran out the journey well, alter showing a brilliant burst of speed about half a mile from home. Winning Hit is by Autumnus (son of Treadmill) from Winning Way, by Cannie Chiel (son of Clanranald), from Lady Wayward, by Bill of Portland from the Trenton mare. Elusive. It is quite a Stonyhurst pedigree, as the sire and grandsire, tog rtaer with the dam and her sire and dam were all bred by Sir George Clifford. Treadmill and Autumnus both failed in the Derby in their respective years, but each of them has sired a winner ol’ the classic race, Treadmill being responsible for Husbandman in his first season at the stud. Winning Hit is not a good track performer, but he is a reliable galloper in public, and having demi onstrated his merit over a journey against the best of his own age, it I will be interesting to see how he will jshape in good company against jolder performers. He claims an engagement this afternoon in the G. G. Stead Memorial Gold Cup. Lucy inks, by M inkie, owned by Mr Bert Lee and trained by J. T. Voung, is galloping well on the locai tracks. The touts say the filly is a regular swallow-catcher, and when started will make the other two-vear-olds do their best. METROPOLITAN TROTS CONCLUDED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCURCH, Nov. 11.
