AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

WANGANUI CALEDONIAN SOCIETY ANNUAL CONCERT. The Wanganui Caledonian Society's annual concert has always been a popular and successful event. This year’s concert, which was held at the Opera House last evening, was no exception to the rule. A large audience was present, and the programme was greatly enjoyed. It was a really admirable programme, for apart from local performers of a high standard, the Society was fortunate in securing the services of Miss Mario Nilsson, a Scottish prima donna, who happens to be in New Zealand on a short visit. Miss Nilsson is a hue artist, and to say she captured the audience is stating a fast in simple •lan,g*uaigo. She possesyets a soprano voice of remarkable range and power. The lower register is particularly pleasing. Miss Nilsson has much dramatic power, and invests her songs with eloquent feeling. Her opening number was “ Lo, Hear the Gentle Lark/’ which evoked a loud encore, in response to which she sang “One Fine from |*Madam Butterfly.” Later she sang a group of Hebridean songs. These quaint little songs were charmingly sung, but they did not fire the audience as did “ A Hundied Pipers/’ which was given as an encore. Only the falling of the curtain saved Miss Nilsson from having to sing again. In the second part of the programme Miss Nilsson sang “Doun the Burn,” “Flora Macdonald’s Lament, and “Last May a Braw Wooer.” The second song suited best the singer’s voice, but the others were sung with much spirit. An undeniable encore followed, “ Whistle and I’ll Come Tae Ye” being given. This only whetted the appetite of the audience, and it was not till Miss Nilsson .had sung “Cornin’ Ihrough the Rye’’ and “Scottish Bluebell that the audience ceased their demonstration. Miss Nilsson was the recipient of two bouquets. The other contributors to the programme were the Misses Thelma and Jean McKenzie, Messrs 1). McKenzie. A. Sutherland, C. ('. McDonald, A. Thomson, George Swan and N. H. Judd, and the Wanganui Pipe Band. They all did excellently. Air George Holloway acted as accompanist. The stage was tastefully decorated with flowers and pot plants supplied by Mrs Wallace.

R.S.A. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB,

The usual weekly competition was fired by members of the above Club last evening on their range, St. Hill Street there was a good attendance, and keen interest was taken. The results were • —Peterson (handicap 1) 49; Howell (2) 4b. these two men were in the final "/th the scores as follows Howell 4/. (handicap 5), 52; Peterson 48 (handicap 3), 51. In the shootvoff Peterson with a handicap of 2. got 49 off the rifle making 51, and Howell, with a handicap of 3, got 48 off the rifle, making 01. In the final shoot-off the scores were as above. The other scores were : Large 49, King and McGonagle each 4/ Strachan 46, Harrison 43 Field 42 The remainder failed to make 40. Messrs Lovegrove amj Dingle were umpires.

In another column it is announced that the date of the Westmere Hall dance has been chanced to to-night.
