SPORTING.

1 NOTES AND COMMENTS. Concluding day at Trentham today. , The Trentham horseman, H. McSweeney, who piloted Alteration on Wednesday, when the big Elevation gelding won the Winter Hurdles, must be given a great chance of riding the winning double. His mount in the Steeplechase is Coalition, whose chances look to be among the best. Alteration gave a great exhibition of jumping when he won the Winter Hurdles, and, .as he has plenty of pace and is a great weight carrier, he is being spoken of already as a likely sort for National honours. When the subject of assumed names for racehorse owners w’as being discussed at the Rac.ng Conference, a delegate mentioned that the late Mr. G. G. Stead began under an assumed name. The fact that he w’as racing came to the ears of the authorities of the bank in which he was working, and “G.G.” was told that he could choose between giving up racing and giving the bank. “Fortunately for racing,” added the delegate, “he decided to give up the bank.” Miss Muriel ran a good race in the Parliamentary Handicap and finished determinedly, but over the last two furlongs her pursuit of Arch Salute was hopeless. Prior to the race some doubts were expressed as to whether Arch Salute would see out a hard mile and a quarter, but carefully handled, he got the journey in great style.
