ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

MELBOURNE, June 29.The Federal Department has received a letter posted on a whalecatcher at Auvord Bay, Graham’s Laiyl, last December, from Captain Wilkins, giving details of the landing of Dr. Cope’s expedition. The party consists ot Dr. Cope, Captain Wilkins, and Messrs.’ Bagshawe (geologist), and Lister (topographer) Considerable stores and equipment, also eight dogs were landed. The intention was to start as soon as possible across Graham’s Land and establish a base on the other side. Then, next, spring or possibly late in the present winter, to go south, carrying supplies and returning in summer, living on seal meat. The steamer will call for the party in February, 1922. From these facts it appears that Dr. Cope’s ambitious expedition has developed into a mere reconnaissance for a party explor. ing Graham's Land.
