THE LATE MR. MEWBURN.
THE INQUEST ADJOURNED
A Coronial inquiry in connection with the death of Mr A. Mew burn was held at Auckland on Tuesday. George Jones, the motorman of the car, said the accident happened about 5.32 p.m., near the corner of Durham, Street. His tram was travelling down Queen Street at about four miles an hour. He suddenly saw deceased about two feet from the front of the car, and instantly applied the emergency brakes. Deceased was knocked down, but the wheels did not pass over him. In reply to questions, witness said he did not sound his gong for deceased, because he did not see him, but he had to sound the gc-ng for other just before deceased was struck.
George W. R. Yates, who witnessed the accident, said his attention was drawn to the tram by the sounding of the gong. John Blakemore, conductor on a tram travelling behind the car that struck deceased, said he heard a loud clanging of the gong on the front car, and looked out. He saw a man in front of the foremost car throw out his hand. Owing to the absence from Auckland of one of the witnesses of the accident, the inquest was adjourned for a' fortnight. FUNERAL YESTERDAY. The funeral of the., late Mr Mewburn was held yesterday. The cortege left the town railway station on the arrival of the train connecting with the Auckland express at 11.20 a.m. About forty motor oars followed the hearse. A separate motor car was needed to carry the large number of wreaths forwarded. Bro. Lee Martin, Grand President of the Grand Lodge, U.A.0.D., conducted the service at the graveside, where a full Druidic service was performed. The religious service was conducted by the Rev. E. R. Harries. In addition to the. Grand President, therepresentatives of the Grand Lodge included the Grand Secretary. Bto. J. Grant Representatives of Druid Lodges were present from Auckland, Wellington, Patea, Marton, and Taihape, the two Wanganui Ledges being strongly represented as well, there being in all about 100 Lodge members present. SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S SYMPATHY At* the Southern Schools Committee meeting on Tuesday night feeling reference was made by Mr Bond to the untimely death of Mr Mewburn, stating that by his death the Committee have lost one of their chief advisers in the forthcoming campaign. Thersecretary was instructed to convey the Committee’s depest sympathy to Mrs Mewburn.
