STROMBOLI IN ERUPTION.
AWE INSPIRING SIGHT.
INDESCRIBABLE TERROR AMONG PEOPLE. Received June 29, 1.20 a.m. ROME, June 28. After ominous rumblings, Stromboli erupted, the eruption being one of the worst in its history. There were dense clouds of steam and violent explosions, while streams of incandescent stones were hurled to a great height, causing fires on the mountain sides. Showers of ashes were obscured on the horizon for hours. The population in the neighbourhood had difficulty in breathing. Panic spread, increasing at night, indescribable terror reigned, people rushing to the shore, and entering the sea and crowding boats, several of which were swamped. It is believed a number were drowned, but impenetrable darkness prevented details being obtained. Torpedo boats rushed from Messina with orders to wireless the Island's needs.
