MARTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) An advertiser in Marton wants to lease a small farm suitable for dairying and handy to school. At the sheep dog trials at Marton on Wednesday the prize for dog owned and worked by maiden competitor was won by A S. Irvine, of Bulls. The Marton A. and P. Association’s match will be held on July 7th of this year, Mrs Kitcat, of Marton, informs us that Dean J. Finlay, mentioned in the cables this week as being murdered, was an M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. He was made a deacon in 1867, and a priest in 1869, and was Lean of Leighlan from 1895 to 1912. The firebells rang an alarm at 10 o’clock on Wednesday evening, the scene of the fire being in the engineroom of the Marton gasworks. Owing to insufficient pressure of water the chemical engine was brought into requisition and quickly subdued the flames, thanks to the smart manner in which the Marton Fire Brigade appeared on the scene. Very little damage was done. The following will represent Marton seniors in their match against Rata at Marton on Saturday afternoon: —G. Thompson, T. Paranihi, A. Pratt, N. Glasgow, H. Stewart, N. Kane, R. McKay, G. Blair, R. Hegglun, C. Hegglun, W. Kane, R. Cashel, I. Ellis, F. Lawrence, C. Henderson, and J. Price. This match should prove to be the most interesting of the season as both teams are evenly matched, and have been showing good form in the field of play in previous matches. It is probable that the Marton “Cheeros” will make a start shortly with another of their clever and entertaining comediettas, and to further the project a meeting of the committee of the Society will be held on Mondayevening next at 7.30. On Sunday evening next the Marton Municipal Band will give another of their popular concerts in the Marton Town Hall.
TO CLEAN A SPONGE. When a sponge is greasy from being clogged with soap, melt a small lump of soda in boiling water, add some vinegar, and well squeeze the sponge in the mixture till it seems to be free from grease. Then rinse it thoroughly in hot water till it is quite clean, and let it dry in the open air. Another method is to sprink’e the sponge with salt and let it remain covered with water a whole day. Then squeeze and well rinse it in cold water. A sponge will last much longer if the soap is well washed out each time it has been used and the sponge frequently exposed to the air to dry.
