CROFTON AND MARTON JTNC- ' JIION COMBINED SCHOOLS. ' ’.The annual meeting of household-ers-of the above schools was held on Monday evening, Mr. William Oldfield presiding over a very full attendance. That the householders are taking a very keen interest in matters educational was evidenced by the fact that 105 voted in the ballot for the election of a new committee. .The master's report showed a roll number of 149 for the two schools, wfQi an average attendance of 136. • Mr Swinbourn, headmaster, thanked Mr. Stafford for courtesy received. and help given in carrying on ♦he-outside activities of th" school during his term of office as chairman. Mr. Stafford (fx-chairman), in reply. referred to his associations with Mr. Swinbourn as master. They had at all times been cordial, the best of feeling had been shown in connection with school activities, and the matter on which they differed was the location of the site for the new school. Mr. William Oidfield expressed the ♦hanks of the householders to Mr. Swinbourn for his very capable ad ministration of the combined schools.

_A very spirited contest was manifest for this year's committee, there being 14 nominees for the seven committeemen. The ballot resulted as follows: —Messrs. William Oldfield (chairman), J. A. Bush, Thos. Whale. M. H. Whale. H. Benfell, P. Whale, and J. T. Fisher (secretary). The need for a new school in this district is very great, and several householders made reference to the i urgent necessity' for improvement. The following resolution was unanimously carried: "That owing to I ♦he grossly inadequate school accom- 1 modation at Marton Junction entail-j Ing hardship to both scholars and , teachers, and in view of the neces-1 sity of providing proper educational facljities for the children in the dis-1 trfct. this meeting of householders of the Crofton School District (which Includes Marton Junction) urges \p-| on the Wanganui Education Board the necessity of proceeding with the i erection of the new school with all possible speed.” lANGITIKEI HUNT. A meeting of the committee of the above hunt was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. D. G. Riddiford presiding. A number of ladies interested in the arrangements of the annual ball were present. It was decided to hold the annual ball on Tuesday. August 2nd, in the Marton Town Hall, and to arrange for a point-to-point steeplechase on Wednesday, August 3rd, for which > the ladies present donated a trophy ‘ for. the farmers’ race, i It was decided to form the Marton Sports League, and Mr. A. H. Bill was appointed delegate. The following honorary members were elected:—Messrs. Geo. Morris, A-J- Frederick, J. R. L. Stanford, A. Cockburn, Fernley Frederick, R. F. Wood, and D. J. Willis, and Mr. W. Hornes as an active member. GENERAL NEWS. It is the intention of the Marton District High School Committee to commemorate the splendid work of the late Mr. J. J. McDonald (chairman for many years) in educational matters by placing an enlarged photograph of the late Mr. J. J. McDonald on the quadrangle at the school, with a suitably inscribed tablet. A novel means of raising money for the school funds was suggested by Mr. F. Purnell at the householders’ meeting at Marton on Monday evening, when he suggested that with such a large attendance “a shilling in” would prove very beneficial, and Mr. Purnell took round the hat and collected £4 17s 6d, which carries j a subsidy At the meeting of Court Little j John, A.0.F., on Tuesday evening Mr ( A. Twelve members of Court Loyal Halcombe visited Court Little John on Tuesday evening, and a pleasant even-i ing was spent with cards, stor.es, and! recitations. The local Ixjdge intends returning the visit to Halcombe during the winter months. Bros. L. Mclndoe, il. Dudley, and A. 31cIndoe were ap jointed to coni er with delegates from the Druids’ Lodge and Tutaenui Social Committee re a triangle card contest for a s.lver cup. At the Cambridge Motor Cycle sports on Saturday E. C. Gadoid had the misfortune to have a spill in one of the races, and broke his right collarbone. This will put the popular Rangitikei iider out of action for some time. At «i meeting of the committee of the Rangitikei Motor Cycle Club on Tuesday evening, Messrs E. C. Gaisford, C. McKenzie, K. Fowler, and F. Blackman expressed their willingness to assist the Wanganui Motor Club at their sports on Satunday next. It was decided to join the Multon Sports League, and Mr C. Blackman was appointed delegate. A ' dance will be held at Bulls during the dancing season The secretary reported that •>/) invitations had been posted for the club’s annual ball ir the Marton loan Hall on Tuesday, 24th May. Tiie following school committee was elected for Western Rangitikei : Messrs S. Coombe (chairman), J. Brice, W. Bowman, L. Bishop and J. Hender.on. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance. A hearty vote of thanks tvas accorded Mr J. Brice for his past services as chairman. The football season opens at Rangitikei on Saturday next, when the following matches wdl be played :—Bulls v. Hur/erville. at Hunterville (referee, Mr T Pataka) : Marton v. Rata, at Rata [referee. Mr A. Gordon) ; Turakina a bye. It is probable that the Halcombe Club will throw in their lot with the Rangitikei Union, and if that i£ correct it will give the Union six senior teams, and clubs with a bye could play Halcombe. Mr H. H. Hunt is a visitor to Marton. For a number of years Mr Hunt was on the literary staff of the Rangitikei Advocate, and was also secretary for th« Rangitikei Rugby Sub-Union and took a keen interest in every branch of sport. The hockey matches for Saturday are Huia-s v. Uniteds, at Feilding; Kiwis v. Soldiers, at Marton. Ladies* games: Hinekoa v. High School, at Feilding; Marton v. at Marton.
