Duncan informed “Sir Lancelot” at Awapuni that Tamatete made his last appearance as a two-year-old in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni. The three best two-year-olds of the season all suffered defeat during the past few weeks, and the question of supremacy is as yet not definitely decided. Mermin, who suffered his defeat in the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton, may not run again this season. Rational was defeated twice at Trentham, once by The Hawk and Absurdum, when conceding his two opponents 91b. and 101 b. respectively. In the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes Absurdum defated Tamatete and The Hawk, when in receipt of 121 b and 71b respectively. In the Manawatu Stakes over the same distance (six furlongs) on the following day The Hawk defeated Absurdum at a difference of 31b.. and on that form is the better of the pair. The Hawk not only won but put up record time for the race. Tamatete put up the same time in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, in which The Hawk could only get fourth. It is very evident the latter was not himself at Auckland, or else he has improved a lot in the meantime. The Hawke’s Bay Stakes, increased this season to 700 sovs., was run earlier than usual. It is a pity that owners of the performers mentioned could not have been induced to start their horses, and thus definitely decide which is the two-year-old champion. Tamatete did not make his first appearance in public until New Year’s Day at Marton. Fortunately for Rational’s backers, Tamatete parted, company with her rider at the start of the-race. Rational was handicapped to concede Tamatete over

three stone. They did not meet on th® second day, when Tamatete beat the same horses that finished behind Rational. Tamatete’s only appearance at the Wellington Cup Meeting was in the Hopeful Stakes, when he beat Winning Hit, Anomaly and others easily. He next appeared on the first day at the Wanganui Cup meeting, when he carried 9.7, and scored another easy win. His ouly appearance at Ellerslie was in the Champagne Stakes, in which he defeated Anomaly, Kick Off, Loyal Irish, The Hawk, and Leithtield. In his half-dozen starts Tamatete has been four times first, once second, and once unplaced. His winnings amount to 1335 sovs. His dam (Tahua) is a thoroughbred mare, but does not appear in the Stud Book. She is by the imported Obligado, whose daughters have proved stud successes, from Te Huinga, by Hotchkiss from Imported Sunningdale, a daughter of Hampton. Mr Dan O’Brien brought Sunningdale from : Victoria. She had a foal by Light Artillery (Trenton —Bengal Light), ■who did stud duty in South Austrai lia. The progeny were Cavalry ond I Calibre. Cavalry, who raced as a | gelding, won quite a lot of hurdle races in the ownership of Mr Bert I Champion, while Calibre won several (races "or Mr John Grigg before taking up stud duty at Longbeach, where he has proved a stud success. “Every year 150,000 Americans die of tuberculosis, and about 1,000.000 more drag out wretched lives avoiding death from it,” says the “New Republic.’ “In America tuberculosis is fatal to one person out of every eight it infects. And this loss is borne where the burden is heaviest, since people are afflicted with ■ tuberculosis in inverse ration to the income tax and the size of the house they live in. It is a vicious circle of poverty that breeds disease and disease that breeds poverty, against which America has on the whole fought a winning fight. So ha.d Germany until the war—now her doctors say the light will have to begin all over again.”

A CAUSE FOR EVERY ILL. Persons who at middle age should feel the full strength and energy of youth, are often rheumatic, nervous, irritable, and inclined to worry too much. There are spells of utter weariness, life is made miserable by constant lameness and dull backache, and sleep is disturbed with pain and distressing urinary disorders. You have tried to shake this off, and wonder why you can’t. Probably you have missed the hidden cause —sick kidneys. Prompt treatment with Doan's Backache Kidney Pills would right things quickly, as in the following case:— Mrs. T. Barnes, 82 Ingestrc- Street, Wanganui, says: “I suffered terribly with my kidneys for some time, and was often so ill that I could hardly get about. My back ached day and night, and the constant pain made me tired and miserable. I was also troubled with dizzy attacks, and had dropsical swellings on my legs and ankles. I tried all sorts of kidney remedies, but nothing seemed to suit my case, and I used to think the medicine was not known that would cure me. In this I was wrong, for a course of Doan’s Backache Kidney Pills fixed me up completely, and I have been well ever since. This remedy was recommended to me as a splendid medicine for the kidneys, and as a last resource I got some, and seven bottles drove the pain out of my back and strengthened and toned up my kidneys, and made me feel a different woman.” Two years later Mrs. Barnes says: “I am still well and have only Doan’s Backache Kidney Pills to thank for my permanent cure.” Doan’s Backache Kidney Pills are sold by all chemists and storekeepers at 3/- per bottle, or'will be posted on receipt of price by Foster-McClel-lan and Co., 15 Hamilton Street, Sydney. But, be sure you get DOAN’S.
