SHOOTING.

WANGANUI RIFLE ASSOCIATION DISTRICT MEETING. The District meeting of the Wanganui Rille Association was held yesterday in line but breezy weather. Early in the uay conditions were cloudy, and indicated rain, but a hot sun shone brightly most of the afternoon. Careful management was evident throughout the day, and first-class condition of the range, and timely arrangement of the matches were a tribute to the work of the executive committee and officers. A start was made soon after 7 a.m. with the service matches, tne four of which were concluded by the noon adjournment. After lunch the Championship series were commenced at 20'J yards. Shooting was continued until 7 o’clock in the evening, I when the 200, 300 and 500 yards championship series had been finished. The wind and light were both occasionally tricky, but the shooting was of good class, and in the afternoon particularly the ; were some good performances. Ritieman W. Salt led off the first service match by scoring the possible at 200 yards. The entries for the meeting totalled over 15u, most of which were for the championship series. Ex-champions are competing, and clubs between Christchurch and Kawhia are well represented. An excellent number of tyros are [participating. Local tradespeople have been particularly helpful in the matter of trophies, and the following have come forward with donations and prizes:—Johnston and Co., J. H. Passmore, Goss, Wanganui match; Cook and Co.’s, Taranaki I match; Levin and Co.’s Wellington match; Mackey, Logan and Co.’s Putiki aggregate; Alason Struthers and Gibson and Paterson, Alanawatu match; Herald Co.’s Hawke's Bay match; N.Z. farmers’ Distributing Co.’s Rangitikei match; Purser’s, Aiarybank aggregate; Nettleship and Son’s, Championship; Dustin’s, W. Al. Luxford, L. E. Bridges, special for best tyro; Air Giblin, special for best aggregate score in championship series made by returned soldier; H. Oakley Browne. Fdr yesterday’s meeting, Capt. Alorgan and Air Porteous were in charge of the butts; Col. R. Hughes, Lieut.-Col. Munro, Alajor Cade, and Lieut. Wales were range officers. The secretary was Air S. Al. Dixon: the treasurer. Major McNaught, and the e officials were assisted by Alessrs Duigan and Cannan. The chief executive officer was Lieut.Col. Cunningham, and Lieut. Lilburn acted as signal officer. Refreshments were procurable on the ground, and a good canteen was run by the local Y.AI.C.A. The following are the results of the first day’s shooting:— SERVICE MATCHES.
