THE GREENWOOD CASE.
GAMBLING ON THE RESULT. LONDON, Nov. 9. At the trial of Greenwood the judges are summing up and the verdict will be given to-morrow. To-day was given up to counsels’ speeches. Interest is unabated and betting on the result is widespread in the North of England. Books are being compiled with professional thoroughness and in the mining districts even women’are laying odds. Mr Marshall Hall, in a three and ahalf hours* brilliant speech, emphasised the doctors’ doubts regarding the cause of death. Two doctors of high reputation gave evidence that Greenwood’s wife djed of morphia and not arsenic. The defence felt justified in suggesting that Dr. Griffiths made an unfortunate mistake and gave a dose of Fowler’s solution at 8 o’clock, which accounted for the presence of arsenic, and completed the disaster by administering a whole grain of morphia later instead of half a grain. The Crown had not even provided a motive for murder. During the closing passages Greenwood was overcome and warders assisted him from the dock.
