CLASS DISTINCTION.

There are some people who are never happy unless sowing the seeds of social and national discord. It is a strange frame of mind, but it manifests itself In all sorts of places at all times and seasons. For instance, it made its ugly appearance at the meeting in connection with the tramways held at the Druids’ Hall on Monday evening. Mr. E. J. Foster very unnecessarily and unfortunately gave voice to sentiments which revealed the frame of mind we have referred to. Mr. Foster alleged that the Mayor dM not take notice of the petition asking for a public meeting because of the social standing of the signatories. This was a statement as unkind as it was untrue, for it will be generally admitted that Mr. T. B. Williams has never, during his long career in Wanganui, said or done anything to set class against class. If anything, he has swung to the other extreme, his desire having always been the wiping out of class distinction. We feel it is only fair to Mr. Williams that this should be said. We regret that Mr. Foster should have made such an allegation, which could have nothing but a bad effect. We think Mr. Foster wishes to do well by his fellow men, and we hope he will just think calmly over the injustice he did Mr. Williams and the evil seeds he sowed in what he must know was not wholly uncongenial soil.
