According to Mr. V. Stefansson, the Arctic explorer, reindeer constitute the source of a large part of the world’s future meat supply. He says [that the animal can grow fat where cattle would starve and the herds will double themselves in three years if only the males are killed. In Alaska there are 100,000 square miles of country suitable for grazing them and in Northern Canada 1,100,000 In twenty years Alaska alone will be able to ship 5,000,000 carcases pet annum. The average weight is 150 lb. and the cost delivered in Seattle i sabout 16s 6d per carcase. The meat is now worth nearly Is 3d per lb. and the hide is valuable.
