THE MARRIAGE LAWS.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE TOWARDS AMENDMENT.

(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5.

In the Legislative Council this afternoon a message was received from the House concerning the Marriage Amendment Bill.

Sir Francis Bell said that while there was probably no objection on the part of the Council to the alteration made to the clause, it would be best to send a message in the usual form, namely, that, the Council insisted on the amendment.— This was agreed to, and the following reason was adopted: That the offence defined was such that in some cases the infliction of imprisonment would not be excessive punishment. The Council resumed at 3.55 p.m. and agreed to the request of the House for a conference on the Marriage Law question. Sir Francis Bell and the Hons. Samuel and Nerheny were appointed managers to meet managers from the House at 5.30 p.m.

In the House of Representatives the reasons for the insistence by the Legislative Council on its amendment in the Marriage Amendment Bill were received and disagreed with. Messrs Craigie, Stewart, and Lee were appointed managers to meet the managers of the Council. The Council resumed at 8 p.m., when the report, of the managers on the Marriage Amendment that the alteration made by the House in striking out the imprisonrrient penalty be agreed to, was adopted.
