£9500 DAMAGES.
AWARDED TO WIDOW OF MURDERED MAN. SEQUEL TO DUBLIN OUTRAGE. LONDON, Nov. 3. The widow of Frank Brooke has been awarded £9500 compensation. She claimed £23,000 on behalf of herself, her son and daughter, but the son’s and the daughter’s claims were disallow-ed. The above case arose as a result of the shooting in Dublin at the end of July of Mr. Frank Brooke (chairman of the Dublin and South-Eastern Railway Company). He was chatting with Mr; Cotton, railway manager. in the board room of the company, when an armed party entered the room and fired a volley and half of Mr. Brooke’s head was shot away. The three assassins escaped unrecognised. One bullet hit a typewriter which a lady secretary was working in an adjoining room. Mr. Cotton dived under the table and escaped. Mr. Brooke had a loaded five-chamber revolver in his breastpocket, but the murderers entered and acted too quickly for him to use it. Mr. Brooke was habitually, accompanied by a detective. The jury at the inquest declared that the murder was premeditated and expressed abhorrence of the crime.
