WAVERLEY FARMERS’ UNION.

A meeting of the Executive of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday night, Mr Gregor McGregor presiding. Messrs Johnston, El nisi io , G. Aiken. Howie, Middleton. Whiteman, and B. J. Johnston were also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. An apology was received from Nir E. A. Symes lor non-attendance. The secretary reported that he had interviewed the Chief Postmaster tn Wanganui, who had given him information in connection with the rural mail delivery. Contractors could not tender at such a low figure as hitherto, on account of the small amount of carriage they handle in transit in comparison with that before the introduction of motor ,car< Settijers brought their mails from town in the majority of cases. He had forwarded the information to branches for consideration. The chairman said the matter had been dealt with at last meeting. Mr Cooper stated that the Sub-Pro-vincial Executive had gone fully into the matter, and ’had instructed him to collect all information possible. No further action was taken. The following remit from the Maxwelltown branch was considered: “That tine suggested round-table conference of all blanches oi Labour and the Farmers’ Union and employers of labour, as adopted by the banners’ Conference held at Fcilding be furthered without delay.” The chairman said there was no quarrel between the farmers and Labour. The matter had been discussed at Palmerston North, and had been thrown out. He thought it was a matter that might he left alone. Mr Middleton said they were not looking for trouble. It did not concern them. He moved that the matter be given no further consideration. Seconded by Mr Howie, and carried. Mr Cooper reported that he had received a quantity of correspondence in regard to the insurance of motor cars. The Wellington Union did not do anything in this line, and the Taranaki Union did. The matter was left in the hands ot Mr Howie. A statement oi Finance for the last six months was read from the Sub-Pro-vincial Executive, which showed a balance on September 39 of £503 5s sd. In reply to Mr Howie, Mr Cooper stated that there were about 90 members in this branch. However, lie would supply a detailed statement for next meeting. The chairman brought forward the question of a veterinary surgeon. At the present time there was none in the district. I n some places branches had a. \ eterinary Association, and subsidised a surgeon. He understood there was a goou man in Wanganui. Air Johnston said it would be better to have a local man, as he would be handy. Mr Howie said this district would not keep a. local man going. Mr Middleton said the district was not large enough. He suggested that Air Cooper procure as much information as possible in regard to the matter. The N.Z. Farmers’ Union wrote enclosing a resolution expressing appreciation of the work done by Sr James Wilson for the. Farmers’ Union. The resolution was endorsed. It was decided to fix the* subscription to the Sir James Wilson presentation at 2s 6d per man.
