SCULLING.
ARNST’S GOOD SHOWING. SYDNEY, August 2. The newspapers appreciate Arnst’s good allowing in the Sydney Handicap after being so long out of the game, and with such short training. He made a slow start, getting away only half a length ahead of Ripley. Before he reached the half mile he had settled Ripley’s chance, and then, opening out, showed much of his old form, though using a heavy boat which prevented him displaying his best form, be passed Kent and Goodsell, but the distance to the finish was too short to enable him to overtake the leaders. William Beach declared thai_Arnst was the wonder man of sculling, and predicted he would come back. Regarding Barry, Beach said he gave a wonderful exhibition: he had never seen anything better. His time for the race proved he was a great bit of stuff. DEATH OF AN OLD-TIME CHAMPION. SYDNEY, August 2. Harry Pearce, who won the sculling championship from Trickett and Laycock in 1880, died on Saturday.
