A MARE’S NEST.

LABOURITES’ HASTY CONCLUSION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTQN, July 31. Labour members inside and outside the House, in the campaign against immigration, have been making much of the case in which the}’ allege two war widows with children were compelled to lodge two nights in the wharf shed. There is another side to the case, which puts matters in an entirely different light. The Minister of Immigration supplies the whole facts, which show that the women were not widows of Imperial soldiers. One is returning to New Zealand. They are sisters, and both were strongly advised by the High Commissioner not to proceed to New kealand. They booked passages at full rates through the shipping company, their fares being paid by their father in London. On arrival in Wellington the Corinthic was boarded by the immigration officers. Neither woman required assistance or accommodation. They remained on board until 13th April, when the vessel departed, and they then called at the Immigration Office. Accommodation was given immediately and work offered at 8/- a day within 24 hours. A cottage of three rooms was offered them at 15/- a week. Both work and cottage were refused. One woman possessed £27, and -was expecting money from London. The passengers were not assisted immigrants, and had nothing to do with the Government.
