WOMEN WHO BREAK UP HOMES

WHEN A WIFE HAS DANGEROUS FRIENDS. How many couples have been parted, how many homes destroyed by the machinations of women homebreakers? Usually they are women comparatively well-off and with plenty of time on their hands. Their husbands are probably of the hen-pecked kind, or it may be they imagine themselves to be absolute mistresses in their own houses. Anyhow, fully satisfied with themselves on this point, they appear to believe all other wives are downtrodden, and it is their mission in life to free them from their husband’s tyrannous control. “My dear, how on earth do you stand it?” says Mrs. Homebreaker to Mrs. Newlywed. “If I were you I would insist on keeping a servant. Your husband is wearing you to the bone.” That is the keynote of her harmful meddling. Mrs. Newlywed does not take much notice at first, but her friend’s attitude is one of luch anxiety for her welfare that she begins to believe at last that she really has grievances. Ordinarily, a wife realises married life must have its trials, and is largely a matter of give and take; but the one under Mrs. Homebreaker’s influsnce is persuaded to think she is not having the fair treatment other wives have. A man who had been married only • two years noticed his wife was becoming intensely dissatisfied with her lot, and more by Instinct than judgment guessed that a woman who was friendly with her was at the bottom of it. Accordingly he came to an amicable understanding with his Wife, and she promised to have no •more to do with his particular friend. A little later she met the identical woman, who immediately began: “Ah, Mrs 8., you’ve been avoiding me lately; I know it. And it is Mr. B. who is doing it. He doesn’t like me, I’m too outspoken. And you are ' Billy enough to let your hubby say what friends you shall and shan’t i have.” After that the young wife was convinced that the woman was a mis-thief-maker, and now she has every reason to congratulate herself on geeping out of her way. But the majority are not so fortunate in finding out in time, and many are the people who owe their unhappiness to the woman whose hobby seems to be breeding discon- i tent.
