BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tee Wanganui Borough Council met last nignt. Present: The Mayor (Mr C. E. Mackay) and Cis D maidson, Green, Sharpe, Thompson. Spriggens, Williams, Gower, Richardson. Luxford, Aitken. COMMITTEE REPORTS. z The following reports were adopted:— WORKS COMMITTEE Brick-making.—The committee recommend that the Engineer be instructed to make a trial burn of a quantity of bricks at Hylton’s pit before proceeding further with the proposal to establish a brick-making industry. Carlton Avenue.—The committee has deferred consideration of the application to have this road formed until a reply has been received from the County Council. RESERVES COMMITTEE. Application to have leases (Farley and Hoult > converted into Glasgow leases.—The committee recom i mend the Council to agree to convert on condition that a clause is inserted in the new lease giving the Council the right of resumption for Borough purposes by paying value for improvements, plus 1 0 per cent. Mr C. L. Curtis’s application for the Council’s consent in reference to lease of laud fronting London Street. Ball Street, and Town Belt Road: (1) As to proposed subdivision an shown on plan; (2) as to the ground rent for each section being fixed at 2/13/6. The committee recommend the Council to comply with the request. subject to Mr Curtis obtaining consent required under Section 117 of the Public Works Act. Also that he agrees that any dwelling erected upon the land shall cost not less than £BOO. Education Board’s Tenancy of the Wanganui East Town Hail.—The committee recommend that this be extended for a period of three months. Aramoho Park.—We recommend the gardener be authorised to plough the available ground and plant the same in potatoes with a view to preparing it for future recreation purposes. Borough Gardener collecting Shrubs.—We recommend that the sum of £l5 be voted to Mr Tucker towards his expenses in consideration of his collecting shrubs and plants for the nursery whilst he is on holiday. » FINANCE COMMITTEE. Rates on Kowhai Park.—The committee report that the land is let on a six monthly tenancy, and that the rent is devoted to the purchase of plants and shrubs for future beautification. It therefore recommends that the rates be remitted. GAS COMMITTEE. Gasfitters’ Wages—The committee recommend that the rate of wages to the gasfitters be increased to 2/- per hour as from Ist February. Gas to Maketu and Millward Streets.—We recommend that the applicants be notified that on making the usual application to the matagar the recmests for gas will be complied witl. MISCELLANEOUS. It was decided to support a resolution from the Invercargill Borough Council in regard to the Railway Department taking better precau- ! tionary methods in regard to dangerous railway crossings. The District Railway Engineer wrote requesting that the question of St. John’s railway crossing should be held over until the question of a station site is settled. F’armission was granted the Male Choir to hold a concert at Virginia Reserve on February 28 th and charge for admission. ’An auctioneering license was granted to Messrs Smith and Beauchamp. On the Mayor’s motion it was decided “That in view of the approaching establishment of electric light and power, the Council should take steps to establish an electric sales and fitting department, and that the matter be referred to the Tramways Committee for their consideration and report.”
