The F. and S. liner Kent left Panama on January 28 in continuation of her voyage from England to New Zealand. The vessel is due at Auckland on February 27. The Shaw-Savill liner Arawa. continued her voyage to England from New Zealand from Colon (Panama) on February 4. The Waihemo, a steel-screw steamer, built by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Co.. Ltd., Howdon-ou-Tyne, to the order of the Union Steam Ship Co. of New Zealand. Ltd., left the Tyne on December 6 for a trial trip, writes the Shipping World. This is the third steamer to be completed this year for the Union Steam Ship Company by the builders. She is about. 415 ft. in length by 53ft. beam by 35|ft deep, and has been built under special survey to the highest class at Lloyd’s, and will carry about 9000 tons d.w. She is constructed on the deep frame and girder system, leaving the holds clear, and has two complete steel decks, including the f shelter-deck. Water ballast is arranged ( for in the double bottom and both peak tanks. The accommodation for the offi- 1 cers and enijneers is placed in steel houses on the shelter deck amidships, and the crew in shelter ’tween decks aft. Nino steam winches with a largo number of cargo derricks are fitted. Steam stearing-gear of the V ilson-Pi rrie type controlled from the bridge by tele-motor gear is installed. The propelling machinery, supplied by the North Eastern Marine Enginering Co., Ltd., • Walsend-on-Tyne, consists of triple-ex-pansion surface-condensing engines having cylinders 27.4 4. 73 by 48in. stroke, with three s.e. boilers, 16ft 6in by lift 6in. 1801 b working pressure, and fitted with Howden’s forced draught.
