Mr! Polk, head of the American delegation, in • conversation with vcn Lersner, declared that Germany would commit a. grievous error, "vrMch would prove disastrous to her, it alie interpreted in, \ her favour Washnngton's delay in the ratification of the Peace Treaty. He added that there were divergences regarding the Treaty, but there were no two opinions in the Unitted States regarding Germany's obligation, and the affection binding the Allies, notably to Prance. Any attempt on the part of Germany to escape her obligation^ would accentuate the strong anti-German sentiment existing in tne United States.
