TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOXING CONTESTS

The Wanganui Technical College provides excellent facilities for the physical training which is now universally recognised as indispensable for a complete education. The girls play tennis and basekt ball, and the bows football and cricket, and all pupils have the opportunity of learning swimming. Moreover all pupils receive daily instruction in physical drill.

Many of the boys also have been taking a keen interest in a boxing class which has been carried on during the year under the supervision of: Mr G. Hurst, a member of the teaching staff. The boys also received some valuable / instruction from Mr A. Pooley* ,hftavy-weigh,t champion of New Zealand, who spent some weeks in training in Wanganui.

The Technical College boxing class for 1919 concluded the season by holding a tournament in the College Hall on December 2nd. There were good entries for the various classes, and the competitors clearly showed the value of the training they had received;- some of the smaller, boys particularly gave /fine displays. • /

F. Boulton was the winner of the school championship in the heavyweight class. The following are the chief results:— , .

Bantam, Final.-—N. Cowan beat F. Evans a-fter a very fine display.

Lightweight.—Carlyle beat Morton. Final: F. Everett .beat J. Car-? lyle.

Welterweight. — Doherty beat Sherrock. Final: Doherty beat S. Barry. . ,

Middleweight.—N. 'Meuli beat A. Vinsen and L. Gilberd beat S. Fleming. Final: N. Meuli beat L. Giiberd. This was a very even bout, and was won by a narrow margin.

Heavyweight.—William Pine beat J. Lockett. This was more of a wrestling match than a boxing exhibition and Pine was the stronger. F. Boulton beat Wahai Pine: This was a very willing contest, but Boul" ton scored repeatedly on his opponent's face, and won with a great deal in hand. Final: F. Boulton beat William Pine.
