ERNSTEIN'S DISCOVERY.
LONDON, Dec. 1. Ernsiein, in concluding an abstruse article in ihe Times, says that the com mentis calculated to c-heer up devoted Newtonians, whose confidence had recently been shaken. While the basio principUiS of tho new theory of gravita- | tion have diverged from Newtons, both ;n practical application agree so closely thai, it is d.fficulb to find cases wherein *.he actual difference could be subjected to observation. Newton's clear, wide ideaJs forever retain their sgnficaiioa as the foundaton whereon our inodorn conception oi: physics is built. The Times, in an editorial, says the new conception makes little difference to the practical world. The laws of physics have become much complicated, bnt we may measure out the land and believe our clocks as bsl'ore the emergence o? Einstein. (Recent cablegrams related a remarkable demonstration by Sir Frank Dyk>ii based upon stellar photographs made during the solar eclipse last May. aparently supporting tho conclusions of Ernstein, a German philosopher, in codtraivention of the full acceptance of Newton's laws of gravitation.)
