WHY DID THE "HERALD" NOT DO LIKEWISE?
Saturday evening's "Feilding Star" says: "We should like to emphasise lhe fact, regarding the statements recently copied from the Wanganui Herald about Mr. Cuttle's promise to share the profits of his fruit farm with the Wanganui Orphanage, that the Star has no personal feeling in the matter at all, and regrets that anything as i
published should be thought to reflect on Mr. Cuttle." This is a voluntary retraction made in a spirit of fair-play. We have ascertained that neither Mr. Cuttle nor his solicitor have communicated with the "Star." Believing it to be true, the "Star" reprinted the "Herald's" slander. Finding it proved to be false, and an underhand attempt to vilify an honourable man, the "Star" has not hesitated to do the right thing. The "Star" did not know that the slander was false: the "Herald" did.
