SOLDIERS ON THE LAND.
In connection with the settlement of returned soldiers on the land in New South Wales, the Minister ', for Lands (Mr. Ashford) recently stated that 1500 holdings for intense Culture were to be proviu.l this year, and general farming, |poultry raising, viticulture, fruitgrowing—-tropi-cal and otherwise —as well as market gardening, would be embraced in the scheme. In addition to these facilities, the Closer Settlement Promotion Act had ' been specially amended to provide that a suitable applicant may obtain land under its provisions,. assistance being given up to 93% per cent. Upwards of £15,000,000 would be available under the provisions of the Act, in cash and debentures, during the present calendar year, for the purpose indicated. While, it was not claimed, nor was it expected, that the neeas of every land-seeker could be met, deserving men would receive every consideration at the hands of the Lands Department.
