BRAVE MEN RESCUE THEIR MATE.

. WHAKATANE, Sept. 2. A thrilling rescue story is narrated from Tarawera river mouth last Saturday. Three drivers—F. W. Mclean, Alan Stewart and H. Pryor, travelling from Te Puke, drove a mob of horses acrorj the flooded river, and themselves followed. When midstream Pryor's horse got into difficulties, unseating Pryor, who was wearing a heavy oilcoat. He was carried away by the flood. He got a tem-i porary footing on a sandspit, but lost it again and was swept out into the breakers. McLean and Stewart having landed safely, galloped to the rescue. McLean, telling Stewart to stand ashore, swam out to Pryor, and soon signalled for assistance, whereupon Stewart, who was waiting in the breakers up to his armpits, also swam out, and together they landed their mate safelyl '
