DIPHTHERIA AT AN ORPHANAGE.
MANAGERS' SALUTARY ACTION.
(Per Press Aeeociation.) DUNEDIN, May 15. An outbreak of diphtheria has occurred in the Glendining Home Orphanage, controlled by the Presbyterian Church. About 80 children are in'the Home, and five are suffering from diphtheria. One patient died two days ago. A deputation to the Charitable Aid Board to-day urged immediate action. Dr. Falconer, medical superintendent of the hospital, reported that practically the whole of the reserve isolation at the Duntdin Hospital was being used for cases which should be accommodat* ed in an outside infectious diseases hosptial. These included 20 cases of scarlet fever in the Fever Hospital, and 20 of diphtheria in the old Nurses' Home. He suggested that the Health Depart* mentt be requesed to act at one*. Rev. Cameron, representing the managers, said that no isolation in the Glendining Home would be satisfactory urtless 67 healthy children were taken away. He threatened to take the diphtheria patients to the hospital, and leave them on the Board's hands if any delay occurred. Subsequently, Dr,Falconer inspected two buildings, m but a? they were unsatisfactory for isolation purposes, the Rev. Cameron took the patients to the Hospital and left them there.
