RAETIHI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) KAtti'uil, May 3. Ohakun© Borough Council has been moving in the matter of getting an ad. aitioaal Health Inspector for this portion of the district, and sent in a request to the Health Department to this Effect. The Department replied that the matter had been referred to the District Health Office. To bring further pressure to bear Ohakune Borough Council sent the following letter to the Kaetihi Town Board, which was read at the meeting last week :—"lt has been apparent for some time past that Mr. Swindells has too much to do to give the necessary attention to health matters in this district, and it is considered desirable by this Council that local bodies interested should each approach the Department with the object stated." The Commissioners would have none of the request, holding thj;.t it was -i direct reflection on Mr. Swindells, the unanimous opinion of the Board being that Mr. Swindells had done and was still doin;r splendidly efficient work. Mr. A. W. Ashwell (chairman) said Mr. Swindell.' had done his best as far as Raetihi was concerned, and had done on every occasion. Mr. Kencke held that the Board was quite satisfied with. Ihe Health Inspector's work. Mr. Sig- ' ley heartily endorsed this. Eventually I it was resolved: "That the Raetih'i Town Board had received efficient service from Mr Swindells, ami therefore Jt could not support, Ohakune in its action."

Tho Labour Party in this electorate «re becoming a well organised body, r.nd will be a power to be reckoned with ai the next general election. An endeavour is being made to Ret a succas«ion of well-known outsiders to deliver speeches here. Mr. Semnle, M.P., will probably sneak here on Friday next, to fc-e followed shortly after by Mr. P. J. O'R^^an the well known Vn"*ister, if Wellington. The attitiuV of Mr. R. W. Smith, M.P., towards the Waiiriarino electorate is causing some curiosity. Is !ie going to stick to the Waimarino .electorate fth© boundaries of which aro to be re-adjusted) or will he woo the suffrages of the .electors of Rangitikei. If he leaves his decision too late he will probably fall between two stools. Perhaps he is waiting instructions from his party leaders. In any case the Labour party are going to make a bold bid for the seat.

The question of direct telephone communication between Raetihi and Wanganui is not to be allowed to drop, in spite of departmental discouragement. A request for Ohakune's support in the matter has been conceded, provided that township is included in the scheme.

The mattei of the drainage at our School has been the subject of comment for some time, and the feeling is that the time has now come to have the • lisgraceful state of affairs remedied. The Education Board will be in receipt of ;\ stronply-wordcd resolution from the School Committee in the near future.
