REMARKABLE GAMES.
YOUNG BEATS SAUNDERS
fPer Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, April 22
The golf championship concluded in beautiful weather, though there was a strong wind. The semi-finals were keenly contested. Young and ■Gonville Saunders fought it out to the last hole; the Palmerstonian being one up. Walter Seifert played a -remarkable game against Imlay Saunders. He was one up on the Wanganui representative at the ninth and all square at the eleventh. Saunders did six holes at this stage in 22, but at the sixteenth found the indomitable veteran of many tournaments still camped on his trail, driving well and approaching spectacularly, but not so happy with his putts on the fast and lying greens. Saunders was one up at the seventeenth, but Seifert caught him again at the difficult home hole perched in a cleft of the hills. Playing to the nineteenth, Saunders drove a phenomenal ball and landed his next at the peg. Seifert slightly over-ran the green and came back short, leaving his doughty opponent one up. The final was played between Young and Imlay Saunders. They were all square at the ninth, but the Wanganui rep. found trouble at two holes in successoin. This seemed to discourage him, and he faded out, Young bringing the championship to Manawatau 5 up and 4 to play.
