PROTEST ABOUT BANNED
LITERATURE

ASHBURTON, April 19. The annual session of the Provincial Grand Chapter ot New Zealand opened in the Orange Hall on Thursday, a-iwl was continued yesterday and to-day. Delegates are attending from a'l parts of the Dominion. Reports showed that, despite dislocation occasioned by th« the war, and the heavy diams upon manhood, the membership &nd finance of the preceptors Were well maintained. Regarding the banned literature the Auckland delegates stated between £50 and £-100 was withheld by the Customs.
It w«s unanimously resolved: "That the Grand Provincial Chapter records ii>w protest against the arbitrary ami partial exercise of its powers by the iSational Government in the inoereats or the itoinan uhurch by the prohibition of the imuortation and circulation ol: loyal, patriotic Protestant literature, which prohibition is in continuance. This Chapter must regard the action of tht> Government as contrary to the-tradi-tions of our Protestanc country, and subversive to those great principles of liberty upon which our lljmpire is founded, and without precedent in the Empire since the Star Chamber of execrable lame. The Chapter therefore calls upon the Government to remove the prohibition and administer the law with impartiality to alj* sections' of the community."
The' Chapter also passed a vigorous protest against Home Rule and Sinn Feinism.
