WANGANUI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
MEETING OF MEMBERS.
REVIVAL OF INTEREST.
A meeting of members of the •, Wa»» ganui Horticultural Society was held
last night,
The President (Mr. W. J. Treadwel!) sadd it was about three years since Jtiie last meeting was held, and members would agree that there was not tlt«
amount of interest shown i'Hat tht»»"«
should have been
Mrs. Suisted hud
worked very hard, and so had 'litbr two of the otheits. There had also
not been the number of me-nuers !*•-
longing to the society or on the cojnr •roittee, although the shows' held wwpi financially successful. Wh-jn. tJie yspHj came on, the society's affairs ;ere allowed to drift, and the Rev. Mi* Scott, who had been secretary for souk* tine,
removed from the district,
Nu-'v that
tlie war was over, it was <lesi<v.t>i6"i«

Since the last meet- ' r:-';/:M ing Mrs Suisted had done the seeretaii. r^|| al work, and he believed she was tb« ■■:ss only person who had done anjihing.7^'^!! The President moved that the ;aodte-i v|||| ty be re-established. < ;'i#l Mr J. A. Neame said it was a remark- (? i"'|t able thing that in a town, of >the size V^ i% of Wanganui—a town-with many enthu->': ";| siastio gardeners and many pretty ;g&^ C?'|| dens—there was such a small numb^r-j^ffj; of people with sufficient interest -i :',&'!'i-$M take up the worlw The town waa ; a difficult size at present. In a small Si|| town like Marton they could more ea*-^j;!f ily run a show, and Auckland and Wc?|^i|l iington had shows on quite a big scalei :,ii'M He felt sure they should redstart thC>3i|| Wanganui society, and hoped ffiß^S||| would be able to induce gardW-lov£i»^|f|| to tako more interest in the sodej&^'|| and its show. »He hoped more |>eop^||| ii would take an active interest in;-gardSa|*!fj developments, and the delightful ehaS|sfo^i there was in .the interchange .of ideas riffi'lf between gardening people/ ■fi^y):yM Mr. Jaokson, who; was:jiresidea^|si^f|i| the Horticultural Society at f «(||| said there they received exhibits froM!;^'^ far and near. They were erea%.^ißo#'fii| ed with nurserymen's exhibits. ■'v'.i/2simM Mr A. A. Only when' they had the Drill Hall did they ha'yet-;r£§ sufficient space. They needed, morels3l stipport than members' ■' tickets.. '^ Hb^f^l considered that they should Jha^tt^:S "I officers; and with new .blood>.: ; «nerj^i,!!''';^^^ and a suitable place for a show, BttTOel^ ;/^' would be assured. . . . .' •'■ .••.'.. VV-*;. ■V.^-jj
Mr Neamte doubted if they oouUTjjetf -> : fi. a better organiser than Mrs Suiated; ?
and he would be very sorry if she did, not accept the office of secretary. -No ' doubt new blood was necessary > but ■ what they really wanted was branches, like the Beautifying Society, at, say, ' Wanganui East, Aramoho, St. John's , Hill, Gonville, and CastJec'iff. It would be better if they jpouldjget j)j»w blood. *J to work' those disiricte under an organ- •* ■'. ising secretary.
Mr Nearae .also referred to another matter. He said the Horticultural go-} ciety at Home was urging an effort to reinstate the devastated gardens in the Allied oountfies, and he wanted to interest the members of the local so-
ciety in raising a, fund. Afe Tauranga* £130 had been raised for the purpose." It was p. matter he would ask them t» consider, with a view of some'ae*/ tion being J;aken. The President's motion was carried, "v A committee consisting" of Messrs. ' Bond.. Jackson, R. Wa.'ker, and A. A. Gower was appointed to arrange for »l chrysanthemum exhibition in the shops. It was decided to provisionally nx , the next meeting for May 7th.
