Soldiers' Club.—-Mr C. E. Mackay moved a motion, of which notice had been given, to the effect that a grant from the funds of the Association be made towards the oost of erecting the Returned So!diers' Club. —Kir. Ball pointed out that it was futile to move such a motion in view of the Minister's published declaration that he would not under any circumstances sanction the use for such a purpose of any money held by Patriotic Societies.—Mr. Mackay replied that if a Btraight-out gnyit could not be made, it might be (possible for the Association to advance on loan, on the security of the build-. ing, a sum sufficient *to enable the erection of the building to be prooeeded with at once.—Mr Alfred Burnett (who gave the necessary land for the club) said he b*d always been definitely opposed to the using of the Association's funds for the purpose proposed. His hope had been that the amount required, some £7000, would be readily subscribed by the public. All they had ever asked for from the Association was its patronage and backing. | They had certain schemes in progre-s by which they hoped to realise the balj ane« still required, some £4000.— Ul- | timately the motion was amended in the direction of referring the mattjr to the Finance Committee for cond' 1 eration and report, and in that form it was put to the meeting, and reject[ed by nine to three, the "Ayes" beiti;; Messrs C. E. Maokay, G. Spriggens [ and R. Hughes.
