HAWKE CUP MATCH. i WON BY POVERTY BAY, . The Hawke Cup match between Wanganui and Poverty Bay was concluded yesterday, the visitors winning by three wickets v after an exciting finish and wresting the trophy from the holders. • The wicket was still soft and the outfield on the slow side. Poverty Bay fully deserved to win, but it was a well-fought game. The victors played keenly throughout and gave nothing away.- On the ■ actual play there was little to choose in the respective batting, but the i visitors were superior in the \ field. The local side's catching was faulty, particularly in the Bay's second innings, and there were several bits of bad ground fielding. Reeves and Coombe carried off the batting honours, and the former got quite an ovation, at the close. Holland stood out by himself as a bowler in the. match and nearly pulled the game out of the fire. In the second innings of the visitors he sent down 23 overs. Fifteen were maidens, and he got six wickets for 36 runs. Burton was in fine form behind the stumps for the home sid* THE PLAY. Wanganui with four wlcketf down for 66 continued their second innings on resuming, the not outs being Ellerm and Hussey. The latter went at double figures, but the former hit freely and reached 23 before hitting one up to Pere. Blamires, Atkinson and Cave went cheaply, but Holland at the tail-end shaped well for 13. Johnston, carried his bat for 8, including a fine six over the fence at long on. The innings closed for 139, and Poverty Bay were set 117 to win. AN UPHILL FIGHT. The visitors opened with Blair and Mills, and at 20 Luxford dropped the latter in the slips. At 27 a dissolution was effected, Mills hitting one up to Atkinson at point. Reeves came next and was dropped by Holland at first slip, but the chance was difficult. Blair went at 35, l.b.w. to Hoi-' land after a good display for .21. Reeves played a watchful game,, but Pere, Miller and Scholium could - do nothing with Holland, and at 60 halt the aide wa3 out. At this stage the game was very, open, but Coombe, a sturdy lefthander, hit lustily and helped Reeves to carry the score to 94, when he was well taken one hand by Cave fairly close in on the on. W. Oates came next, and at 9-8 Reeves drove a ball back to Blamires, who made a good one-handed try, Ortoni also endeavouring to get the rebound. Oates hit out pluokily. A moment later he snicked a ball to Luxford at first slip and the board read* 110-—7—B. J. Oates hooked Blamires for four and was dropped by Huasey at deep line leg. A single came next, and Pdverty Bay won. ; , '-"*■—-"""" Wanganui, first innings .. .. 104 Poverty Bay, first innings.... 1-27 WANGANUI —Second Innings.
