Kominafrton for all events, also second forfeits for the Jackson Stakes, 1919, close with *3ie secretary'of Wanganui club, Mr Win. Hall, to-day, January 24, at- 8 p.m. , The racing at Trentham on Wednesday was full of interest., and the finishes on the whole more close and exciting than usual.
B. Deeley rode four winners during the day: Bindle, Red Ribbon, Gloaming and Nanna. In the Trial Plate. Sardinia fell and broke a leg, being subsequently deKsroyed. A. Reed, his rider, had a leg broken, and was removed to the hospital, being unaVe to fulfil his engagement; to ride Mascot in the Cup. At Trent-ham the placing* in ih G big double were on the lines of the Auckland results, as Nanna won both sprin.s, and Red Ribbon, 6econd in,the Auckland Cup, dead-heated in the Wellington Cup. Gloaming paid better than even money in the Wellington Stakes, which must, in view of his previous performances, be regarded as a false price. ]t was a" popular fallacy that racing over a distance had taken the edge off h;s speed. The Press Association report wrongly placed Suiveyor second in the Wellington Stakes, whereas he finished third behind Gloaming and Warplane. According lo the "Dominion," the I racing was excellent, and th c Cup provided one of the best of races and one of tlw most exciting finishes. For some day? before the meeting it appeared as though theßiddiford bracket (Men?lavs, with H. Gray up, and Mascot) would be> the machine favourites, but a great 'trial by R-ed Ribbon brought tba mare into favour. However, on the race cards Punka and Kilmoon were I found to bo bracketed, and the public eventually made these two southerners the actual favourites. The consistent Red Ribbon was next in demand, and then the Riddiford pair. The betting was very heavy, over £10,000 being invested. The race was a fine contest throughout, and when the field1 turned into tha straight most, of the horses had chances. A furlong from the poat Rewi Poto shot out. and left the field, but shorty afterwards Red Ribbon got clear and began to overhaul Rewi Poto at a tremendous rate. Amidst a scene of excitement 'the mare got up in time to dead-heat wilh Rewi Poto. Punua, who had run a good race, was third, arid Hcathercotc fourth. A thing v/ort.h noticing about Rewi Poto's success is the frequency with which a horse carrying about the- weight allotted to him scores in the Wellington Cup. Tbjs is Rewi Poto's first success for som e ' *w, though h.c raced prominently at Awapuni and at Feilding. Red Rib-ban '?n with remarkable consistency thriUi»hout last season, and won at the l<-ftf Auckland meeting.
