'CHRISTCHURCH VETERANS SUPPORT WANGANUI RESOLUTION.
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Chronicle.")
CHRISTCHURCH, January 21
At last night's meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council, a letter | was read from the Wanganui branch p-of tlie South African Veterans' Association, asking the Council to endorse a resolution passed by the Association as follows: "That in view of the early repatriation of New Zealand soldiers, the necessity should be urged upon the Government of taking timely steps to ensure their proper transport, in order that such regrettable occurrences as that on the troopship Britannic at the end of the South African War might be avoided, and that, in particular, the overcrowding .of the transports should be strictly guarded against, notwithstanding any extra expense, such a policy might entail. Councillor H. Wise said there had not been any complaints about overcrowding on. the transports. He wanted to see the men brought back as quickly as possible, and opposed endorsing the Wanganui resolution on the ground that no need had been shown for such a resolution. Other coubcillors supported the proposal, and it was decided to endorse the Veterans' Association's motion.
