WELLINGTON, January 7

Hon. Herries to-day stated that the Railway Department would go ahead as soon as it could. Authority to raise necessary loans had been granted by Parliament years ago, but the needs of the war had taken precedence in finance, as in other matters. Some of the operations recommended by Mr. Hiley had been undertaker^; for example, the reclamation at Auckland, as a preliminary to railway extensions. The Wellington scheme (including the railway station and further reclamation for sidings and other purposes) had been enlarged.
