At a. meeting of Waverley School Committee Mr Davis referred +o "the splendid stand," taken by Mr Hemingway on tl:e Board of Education in relation to the Goldsbury case. A iesolution of appreciation wag carried.
The Telegrali Department advises: The EFM. (soldiers' telegram) service, also cash remittances via Pacific, have been suspended. This class of telegram is not accepted via Eastern at present.
Members of the Council of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce (Incorporated), are reminded of the usunl monthly meeting to be held at ths office, 14 Wicksteed Place this (Monday) evening at 8 o'clock.
The effort in connection with the special offering on behalf of trust funds, organised for yesterday by th* local Methodist Churches, though not completed, shows gratifying results. The offerings for Trinity Church were £95 7s 6^. for Gonville £33 10s, for Wanganui East £63 2s 6d, and with promises total £100.
At the conclusion of the evening service at Trinity Methodist Church, yesterday, a resolution was carried unanimously protesting emphatically against the hesitancy of the National Government in giving effect to the recommendations of the National Efficiency Board, and demanding that a-poll on the Prohibition issue be no longer delayed.
At the conclusion of the service at St. Paul's Church last evening, the following resolution was carried : " That this congregation urges the Government to close all hotel bars and stop th^ sale of all intoxicants during the peace celebration." Similar resolutions were car. ried unanimously at St. Andrew's (Presbyterian) and Dublin St. (Methodist) Churches yesterday.
Th e mover of the motion at St. Andrew's Church last evening, concerning the closing of the liquor bars on Armistice Day, remarked ibat he could not, for the life of him, see why these bars should remain open when all other shops were closed. He remarked that if the National Government failed to take this step it would be driving another nail into their own coffin. The motion was carried nemcon.
Another of the mines that was laid off Cape Farewell by the Germans a little over 12 months ago was found mi the Manakau beach on Friday night, about five miles north of Otaki. The mine was discovered by Miss Drake, and had evidently been recently washed up on the beach, being just at high water mark. It stands about three or four feet high, and has either two o«" thre« horns. The police were notified of the discovery, and they communicated with the naval authorities in Wellington. x
On account of the prevailing epidemic, the tramway authorities have had great difficulty during the past week in maintaining the service. Fourteen of the running staff are laid up, and it has been through the good efforts of che remaining men that the service has been kept going, they having worked double shifts during the past week. This, however, cannot continue, and from today a curtailed service will be run, particulars of which will be found on another page of this issue.
All workers in connection with t.h»j Red Cross Shop, yHis Majesty's Buildings, are invited to join with the Depot Committees and the various distri :t sub-committee in the procession on the day of the peace celebrations, and to wear a white apron with Iled Cross in front and a handkerchief similarly decorated, on lthe head. Assemble a*, the shop at 130 p.m. in the event of news arriving before noon, or at 9.45 next morning should word come after mid-day.
