GERMANS ADMIT RETIREMENT.
LONDON, October 1
A German communique issued on the Ist October at 2.10 in the morning, states: The enemy, breaking into our position on th e 27th compelled us to withdraw the right wing on our defensive front from northward of Dixmude to Werken and evacuate the Wytschaete salient.
Tremendous fighting continues between Cambnai and St. Quentin. The enemy obtained a footing in the suburbs of Cambrai at Neuvill c and Catimpre. Southward of Marcoing the enemy forced us back behind tlie canal sector of Masnieres and Crevecvoeur. We retook ViJlers Guislain. The enemy crossed the canal between Bellicourt and Belle Engh'se. Our regiments northwards of Gricourt withdrew their line to Le Haucourt. The English bought their local successes sanguinarily. They captured Manre and Ardeuil.
We took, in front of the Americans, Apremont and Monterau Wood.
We downed 45 aeroplanes
