THE TRAMWAY BREAKDOWN.

BETTER SERVICE PROBABLE TO-

MORROW

A lot of hard work and hard tliinking lip.s been caused by the breakdown in tiie power-house machinery. The very "limited service which ii has been found possible to run by the joint u.se of two .smnli engines and the accumulators, seems to have :net the urgent needs oF the public, a-Uhough nob their convenience. There is a prospect, however, that soon —perhaps to-morrow — will sea more cars on the roads. The wreckage in the engine has been cleared away, and temporary repairs are being effected, and an effort is to be made to run the engine on three cylinders instead of four. Mr Ta!bo.ys hopes that the trial will be a-- success, although the power thu s obtained will not be equal to what would be derived from four cylinders.

In the maentime every effort is b<* ■ ing made to have the engine repaired. The Borough Council held a spwial meeting at the power station yesterday morning, and after discussing the nue>. tion it was decided to give Mr Talboys a free, hand in carrying out repairs as expeditiou.siy a s possibV. He has ii-Irendy got into touch with the original contractors, in Wellington, and they giv o some hope of getting a casting made in Dunedin. The plans hare filready been forwarded, and Mr Talboys hopes to receive a wire within a few days giving a definite statement as to whether they can curry out th-e work or not. If the temporary repairs be completed in a day or so, avid ihe trial or tiie three cylinders i s .satisfactory, the tramways engineer will be in a position to state definitely what kind of a service it jvill be possible to run until the complete repairs are effected. Mr Talboys state* that he had hoped to be able to run a service for Uie benefit- of the long distance passengers at Castleclifi and Aramoho terminus, but he finds that this will be impossible.

A temporary tim^ta'Jle has been mado out, and put in all time-tablo boxes, and until further notice this will be adhered to as closely as possible.
