CLOSING ON CAMBRAI.

(Received Qct 2, 10.80 p.m.)

LONDON, Oct 1

Reuters tcorfespondent at the British Headquarters, writing on the evening of Seytomber 30th, says: The battle for St Quentin and Cambrai was resumed to-day in a howling wiad and slashing rain. The enemy brought up fresh reserves, resisting desperately, chiefly with machine guns. The Canadians north-west of Cambrai, attacking along the railway, progressed knee deep in slush. A German counterattack drove them back, but later the Canadians re-attacked and carried the line well north-west of Cambrai.
