The first meeting of the ne^velectt>d (iouville Town Board was jtfHd last evening. Present: C.ommissiOTßfra J. C. Arnold (chairman), Sveuson, (i. C. Jjiillock, W. Gilberd, H. Thayer, il< C Firth and C Pearee.
Mr. C. H. Burnet1; applied to the. Board to have a lamp ere-ted in Carell' Place. —Jftei'erred to the Works' Coiuniitl.ee.
The Harbour Board wrote in reference to the erosion on the river bank ac Balgownie, and forwarded a copy of the foreman's report, as follows: — About 16 chains of %he bank from Mr. Duigan's to the -Balgownie station is unprotected, and is being badly eroded. Beyond the station about 20 chains havp been protected by a timber wall which is being undermined r.nd nas been carried away in places. The best mo.:hod of protection would be an apron of rubble reaching about two feet above higb tide mark. I estimate the quantity of stone required at 22 cubic yards per chain. The cost would be 13s. per cubic yard, or £14 Gs per chain.— The Board considered that it was a matter for the property-owners affected, and; decided to draw their attention to the' Boards offer which they could take advantage of if thej- chose.
The Board decided ti> take leaal' advice from Mr. Martin aB to tn« Board's jurisdiction in regawi io th» river frontage.
Keferenoe was made to the practise of carters in bringing their vehicles across the curbing, so breaking the concrete- The Engineer was authorised) to prosecute.

ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The Board's engineer reported foi the month as follows:—
Small repairs have been attended xo, and the road .widening at Fitzhierbert^ Avenue is being proceeded with intermittently. The cost to date for this work is £53125., and the widening vrj! be completed in a few days. Bedford! Avenue road formation will then be put in hand. It will be necessary to repair. Queen's Avenue this month, especially the. res tarred portion, which should re*; ceive a dressing for its whole length. "With the erection of the new wool store at Balgownie tiie traffic on this load will be considerably increased, and with the small sum available for public works this year, I fear some portions of the district will have to be neglected in order to keep our main roads in fair condition onlj*.
During the heavy downpour of rain in September the Recreation ground was again flooded, also upper To*ana Street and Brougham St-, and Fox Road, no damage of any sort was dona to the Board's works, but considerably inconvenience and minor damage was {lone to a few ratepayers, especially m Totara and York Streams.
Flooding in. Totara. Street could JW prevented to a certain extent by opftaing cross drains on Mr. "Wotton's property, but the only permanent solution is the- extending of the drains to this locality. This could be done frora Manuka Street via Toi Street, distance about 30 chains, whilst if extended another 8 chains, 2 additional houses could be served, making seven in ail along this route.
[ The Recreation grounds will also continue to flood in very wet weather, until such time as the 12in. sewer is continued on from the Junction. This is to be very much regrefcted, as at Jim moment a proposal for erecting severdi" houses on property adjoining the Recreation grounds is being considered, and the only outlet for their drainage is l>y the Abbot Street sewer, whicn terminates at Matai Street. Another drainage extension which will soon be required is to the Church of England, Koromiko Road. lam Informed that a school far 100 scholars" is to open shortly, and the shortest un<i bo.^r. route is via Kawatiri Av e nu? f distance about 14 chains.
The Bnths were opened on the Ist instant, and the extra accommodation authorised by your Board has bieer commenced.
As the cost to thoroughly repair the motor-bike would be out of proportion to its usefulness for the period it wou>:3 last, I would recommend ;that it be disposed of.
The report was received, and the engineer was instructed to formulate .1 schedule of all works necessary in t!i<* dis'.rict. The mutter of the bicycle wa^ left in the hands of Mr. Svenson anrj "the Engineer.
