RETIRING BEHIND THE AILETTE

MANGIN THREATENING LAON

LONDON, September 30,

The United Press's London correspondent learns unbfficialiy that the enemy is apparently retiring from the ijhemin dcs J>ames.

Mr. George Perris reports that General Carlowitz's sudden abandonment of the Malmaison front—one of the strongest German positions on the Weso front —and his retreat behind the Aillette began on Friday night. . Jiangin's army has been steadily pur- j suing tiie patient investment of the Malmaisyn plateau by ft concentric movement from the north-westward, westward, and southward. His troops were engaged in a fierce encounter «.>n Friday at. Colombe Farm, and bombarded tli© whole region, during the night. Patrols went out at 6 o'clock next morning and encountered resistance around the ruined villages cf Ainsy and Aisy, but exploding bombs and burning stores made it clear what was afoot. A general advance began at 9 o'clock between Vauxaillon and Vailly, and quickly reached and passed the famous landmarks of the Cheiniu dcs Dames. Violent explosions occurred in the morning at Fort Malmaison, but no one was hurt. The French advanced and reached- Pinon and Vaudesson by the evening. The pursuit was continued during the night. On Sunday morning we reached the old front on the Ailette. Mangin's left wing advanced beyond the. old line and reached Grandcourt. threatening Ainsy le Chattau and Laon from the west, j as well as from the south.
