The upper end of the TWn Wharf bei'tha:>;e is silting up. and vessels having occasion to discharge or load there have touched bottom. Shipmasters Lave complained of this for some time past. For instance, on Monday afternoon, at a time when there should June been plenty of water at the spot, the s.s. Storm, moving lower down the wharf, encountered the sandbank, and it took seme skilful manoeuvring to shift her and eventually moor her again. Accor. ding to s-iiiu masters, "the berthage is only a gutter, and o, shallow one at tb.if." It is stated that another shaL low has appeared, abreast of the new slip. Doubtless the Harbour Board iw ( iU lose no time in setting the dredge to work at these spots. Some time hack an Sr-xperiment was tried in the way of digging what might be term-^i a, deep "hole" slightly above the wharves, and this had the effect of maintaining for a considerable time the depth where it had been dredged. The '"' hole"' has since filled up, and the ol«l trouble is manifesting i+self again.
