RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.
ROAD INSPECTOR'S REPORT.
In the course of his report to the Rangitikei County Council on Saturday, the Road: Inspector stated : — Rangitoto Riding. — The roadmen have chiefly been engaged repairing the surface of the roads, which were badly cut up during the long spell of wet weather. The Rangitikei River at Bulls shifted its course, and struck the -ro_ tective works some distance above the bridge at a very bad angle, and scourer! out a very deep channel, which undermined the o'd work and caused it to sink down. I immediately put on men and built the work up again by putting in trees and wire crates filled with stones. 3 think it is secure again now, hut portions may sink again and require rebuilding. As instructed. I pegged off and took levels of the proposed drain from the Bulls butter fnc.
Tory down through Mr Ellery's property to the Tutaenui stream. I have * calculated the quantities i'or cutting a drain six feet wide on the bottom, with betters of half to one. I think this
would carry all the water excepting in a very heavy flood. I estimate the cost iof vaakinpr drain at £92. I would ' suggest that large concrete pipes to replace all the bridge? along the road on this fiat be ordered at once, before there is any further increase in the price of pipes. Mr Whisker asks «thot the pipes across the road at Fernwocd Gully be taken up and lowered so as- to drain a lon* piece of kind on his property. Powera Riding—The ro-itis are in fair order, considering the weather prevail, ing recently. A good deal of work is required to put them in good order. The roadmen are engaged filling potholes,- 6 tc. The grader has started work again on the Fern Flats roads, and I propose to keep it going if the weather 13 suitable. Otakapu Riding.—The Ruaiangata and several other roads are in bad order, and require immediate attention. I hope to be able to put men on nex* week to repair them. I have just received advice from the sawmiller that part of the timber for the Turakina and other bridges is ready at the mill for inspection. Lower End, Wangaehu Riding.— Many slips cnme down, but the work of removing them is well in hand. There are a number of ratepayers in this Riding who are allowing gorse to spread badly on" to the roads. Notice has been given to them sever.il times. They do h little work, and then leave it again. Many of them are under the impression that the Council will not enforce the notice during the period of the war.
