A COSTLY REFUSAL.

(Per Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, August 5

At the Police Court to-day, Robert Fraser, master mariner, and assistantsuperintendent of the mercantile marine and surveyor of ships, was charged with obstructing an armed guard, contrary to the War Regulations. The evidence snowed that the defendant refused to show a pass when it was demanded-,, although in possession, of it. He also refused to give his name and address. He was also alleged to have used filthy language* in regard to the War Regulations. The defence was that he, as a Government officer, was being baited for the edification of a crowd of men who were standing by. Magistrate Bartholomew held the charge proved, and fined defendant £10.
